Alabama DMV Test FAQ
How many questions are on the Alabama driver permit test?
The AL DPS driver knowledge test has 30 multiple-choice questions drawn from the official state handbook — covering road signs, traffic laws, right-of-way, and safe-driving procedures.
On the Alabama DMV test, should I answer what's literally in the handbook even if it seems overly cautious?
Yes. If the handbook says "come to a complete stop at every stop sign," answer that — even if in the real world people roll through. Test questions grade against the handbook, not real-world driving habits.
Do I need a REAL ID version of my Alabama license?
STAR ID (Alabama's REAL ID) costs the same $36.25 as a standard license, has an 8-year validity cycle, and must be obtained in person at an ALEA exam office with proof of identity, SSN, and two proofs of residency.
Is there a time limit on the Alabama knowledge test?
No — AL DPS does not enforce a strict time limit on the knowledge test. Take the time you need to read each question carefully, but don't overthink after your first instinct.
Will AL DPS test my vision at renewal too?
Required at in-person renewal; not required for online renewal.
If I'm under 18, does a parent need to be with me for the Alabama test?
A parent or guardian doesn't sit through the test with you, but under-18 applicants normally need a parent's signature on the application before AL DPS will schedule or administer the exam. Bring the signed form.
Is the Alabama written test the same as the road test?
No. The knowledge test is a written or computer-based exam on rules and signs. After you pass it, you'll take a separate behind-the-wheel road test with an examiner to earn your full license.
What documents does AL DPS require to take the test?
Two forms of ID (at least one with photograph) or three non-photo forms, original Social Security card, and two proofs of principal residence. Applicants under 19 must show school enrollment documentation.
Does the Alabama test include road-sign identification questions?
Yes. A substantial portion of the questions test recognition of standard road signs by shape, color, and meaning. Practicing at /signs alongside our full quizzes is the fastest way to lock these in.
Do I need an appointment for the Alabama knowledge test?
Walk-in service offered at Driver License Examining Offices; online appointment scheduling available at alabamadl.alea.gov but not required.
