Alabama DMV Test FAQ

How many questions are on the Alabama motorcycle (Class M) permit test?

The AL DPS motorcycle (Class M) knowledge test has 30 multiple-choice questions drawn from the official state handbook — covering road signs, traffic laws, right-of-way, and safe-driving procedures.

How many questions can I get wrong and still pass the Alabama test?

You can miss at most 6 questions. Any more than that and AL DPS will mark it a fail — you'll need to retake.

Can I take the Alabama DMV test in a language other than English?

Yes. AL DPS offers the knowledge test in 12 languages including English, Arabic, Chinese, Farsi, and 8 more. Ask when scheduling if your language is available at your chosen office.

Do I need a REAL ID version of my Alabama license?

STAR ID (Alabama's REAL ID) costs the same $36.25 as a standard license, has an 8-year validity cycle, and must be obtained in person at an ALEA exam office with proof of identity, SSN, and two proofs of residency.

Will I see my Alabama test score right after I submit?

Yes. AL DPS testing terminals display pass/fail and your score immediately after you finish. If you pass, they'll normally begin permit processing the same visit.

How much does the Alabama DMV knowledge test cost?

The AL DPS knowledge test costs $5. $5.00 per knowledge test attempt, cash only (no checks); same $5 applies to each retake.

Is the Alabama knowledge test on paper or computer?

Computer-based (automated testing equipment); 30 questions, 80% to pass (24 of 30).

What's a Alabama-specific rule that shows up on the test?

One example: GDL restrictions for 16-year-olds: no driving 12am-6am and no more than 1 non-family passenger under 21 Rules like this are drawn straight from the state handbook and are the ones out-of-state applicants most often miss.

If I'm nervous, is it better to reschedule my Alabama appointment?

If you consistently score at or above passing (80-85%+) on our practice tests, don't reschedule — test-day nerves usually drop 5-10 points and you'll still pass. If your practice scores are still below passing, more prep + a later date is worth it.

Should I read the whole Alabama handbook before taking practice tests?

Not necessarily. Most successful test-takers skim the handbook once, then drill practice tests. When they miss a question they jump back to that chapter. This is far more efficient than a cover-to-cover read.
