Alabama Handbook FAQ
Is this the official Alabama driver handbook?
Yes. The handbook mirrored above is the same document AL DPS publishes on its official website — we host it here for faster mobile loading and cleaner reading.
How is the Alabama knowledge test administered after I finish reading?
Computer-based (automated testing equipment); 30 questions, 80% to pass (24 of 30).
After I pass, how often will I need to renew my Alabama license?
Alabama licenses are valid for 4 years. See /learn/how-to-renew-license/al for online eligibility, REAL ID upgrade steps, and vision-test rules.
Should I read the Alabama handbook as a PDF or HTML?
PDF preserves the state's page layout and images; HTML is faster on mobile and searchable via Ctrl-F. Most students find HTML best for study, PDF best for a final read-through before test day.
Do first-time drivers and renewing drivers use the same Alabama handbook?
Yes. AL DPS publishes a single unified handbook covering both. Sections marked "For New Drivers" or "GDL" are the ones a renewing driver can skim; the rest is universal.
How often is the Alabama driver handbook updated?
AL DPS typically publishes a new edition once a year, though major legislation (e.g., hands-free laws, GDL changes) can prompt an off-cycle refresh. The date on the cover indicates the current edition.
Should I upgrade to a REAL ID version of my Alabama license?
STAR ID (Alabama's REAL ID) costs the same $36.25 as a standard license, has an 8-year validity cycle, and must be obtained in person at an ALEA exam office with proof of identity, SSN, and two proofs of residency.
Can I read the Alabama handbook on my phone?
Yes. Both the official PDF and our mirrored HTML version work on mobile. HTML loads faster on cellular and is easier to search — use the reader above for study sessions on the go.
