Alabama DMV Test FAQ
How many questions are on the Alabama CDL permit test?
The AL DPS CDL knowledge test has 30 multiple-choice questions drawn from the official state handbook — covering road signs, traffic laws, right-of-way, and safe-driving procedures.
If I'm nervous, is it better to reschedule my Alabama appointment?
If you consistently score at or above passing (80-85%+) on our practice tests, don't reschedule — test-day nerves usually drop 5-10 points and you'll still pass. If your practice scores are still below passing, more prep + a later date is worth it.
Will AL DPS test my vision at renewal too?
Required at in-person renewal; not required for online renewal.
Do I need a DOT medical card before the Alabama CDL test?
Yes. FMCSA requires a valid DOT medical examiner's certificate before you can be issued a CDL — bring it to your appointment. You cannot take the CDL knowledge test without one on file.
How many questions can I get wrong and still pass the Alabama test?
You can miss at most 6 questions. Any more than that and AL DPS will mark it a fail — you'll need to retake.
Is the Alabama written test the same as the road test?
No. The knowledge test is a written or computer-based exam on rules and signs. After you pass it, you'll take a separate behind-the-wheel road test with an examiner to earn your full license.
Do I need an appointment for the Alabama knowledge test?
Walk-in service offered at Driver License Examining Offices; online appointment scheduling available at alabamadl.alea.gov but not required.
How many practice tests can I take on this site?
Unlimited. There's no login, no daily cap, and no payment gate. Take one, review your mistakes, take another. Free practice tests are how we help — we make our money from ads, not from the tests.
Is there a time limit on the Alabama knowledge test?
No — AL DPS does not enforce a strict time limit on the knowledge test. Take the time you need to read each question carefully, but don't overthink after your first instinct.
Do I need endorsements beyond the Alabama CDL general knowledge?
Depending on what you'll haul, yes: Hazmat (H), Tank (N), Doubles/Triples (T), Passenger (P), and School Bus (S) each have their own written test. Air Brakes (L) is also required for most tractor-trailer combos.
