Plain-English definitions for 16 terms you\'ll encounter on driver license tests, CDL endorsements, and DMV paperwork.

CDL (Commercial Driver's License)

Federally regulated license required to operate large commercial vehicles. FMCSA sets the standards.

Class A License

Federal CDL class for combination vehicles ≥ 26,001 lbs GVWR with a towed unit over 10,000 lbs.

Class B License

CDL for single vehicles ≥ 26,001 lbs GVWR (straight trucks, large buses, dump trucks).

Class C License

CDL for vehicles under 26,001 lbs that carry 16+ passengers or placarded hazmat. Also the standard non-commercial passenger car license in most states.

Driver License (DL)

Government-issued credential authorizing the holder to operate motor vehicles on public roads.

DMV

Department of Motor Vehicles — the state agency that issues driver licenses, vehicle registrations, and IDs.

DOT Physical

A medical exam required for CDL holders, certifying physical fitness to drive commercial vehicles.

Endorsement

A federal CDL add-on certifying you can haul a specific cargo type or operate a specific vehicle configuration.

FMCSA

Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. Sets nationwide CDL testing and operational standards.

GDL (Graduated Driver Licensing)

A multi-stage licensing system for new drivers: permit → provisional → full license, each with progressively fewer restrictions.

GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating)

The maximum operating weight of a vehicle as specified by the manufacturer, including cargo and passengers.

Hazmat (H Endorsement)

CDL endorsement required to transport placarded hazardous materials. Requires a TSA background check.

MUTCD

Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices — the federal standard for road sign design, color, and placement.

Learner's Permit

A restricted driving credential allowing supervised practice driving before getting a full license.

REAL ID

Federally compliant driver license required for domestic flights and federal buildings as of May 7, 2025.

TSA Background Check (HME)

The Hazardous Materials Endorsement Threat Assessment — a federal background + fingerprint check required for CDL Hazmat (H) endorsement.
