Utah DMV Test FAQ
How many questions are on the Utah driver permit test?
The UT DPS driver knowledge test has 25 multiple-choice questions drawn from the official state handbook — covering road signs, traffic laws, right-of-way, and safe-driving procedures.
Do I need a REAL ID version of my Utah license?
By law, you may not possess more than one REAL ID-compliant credential at a time (e.g., a Utah license and a Colorado ID).
Should I read the whole Utah handbook before taking practice tests?
Not necessarily. Most successful test-takers skim the handbook once, then drill practice tests. When they miss a question they jump back to that chapter. This is far more efficient than a cover-to-cover read.
Does the Utah test include road-sign identification questions?
Yes. A substantial portion of the questions test recognition of standard road signs by shape, color, and meaning. Practicing at /signs alongside our full quizzes is the fastest way to lock these in.
Do I have to pay for the Utah driver handbook?
No. UT DPS publishes it free as a PDF and often prints free copies at DMV offices. Beware sites that charge to "download" it — the state's version is always free.
Should I go with my first instinct on the Utah test?
Usually yes. Research on multiple-choice exams shows changing an answer helps only when you realize you misread the question — not when you simply feel uncertain. Read carefully once, commit, move on.
What happens before I actually take the Utah test at the office?
You'll present your documents, pay applicable fees, pass the vision screening, and (if you're issued a permit that day) get your photo taken. Only then are you handed off to a testing terminal or a paper packet.
Is the Utah knowledge test on paper or computer?
50-question closed-book multiple choice for never-licensed applicants; 25-question open-book for previously licensed; 80% required (40/50).
If I'm under 18, does a parent need to be with me for the Utah test?
A parent or guardian doesn't sit through the test with you, but under-18 applicants normally need a parent's signature on the application before UT DPS will schedule or administer the exam. Bring the signed form.
How many questions can I get wrong and still pass the Utah test?
You can miss at most 5 questions. Any more than that and UT DPS will mark it a fail — you'll need to retake.
