Michigan DMV Test FAQ
How many questions are on the Michigan CDL permit test?
The MI SOS CDL knowledge test has 50 multiple-choice questions drawn from the official state handbook — covering road signs, traffic laws, right-of-way, and safe-driving procedures.
Are practice tests harder than the real Michigan DMV test?
Our practice tests are calibrated slightly harder than the real exam — questions include the trickier phrasings and edge-case scenarios so you're not surprised. If you consistently pass practice at 90%+, the real test will feel easier.
Do I need a calculator for the Michigan knowledge test?
No. Any math on the test is basic mental arithmetic — for example, stopping distances or BAC thresholds. Calculators aren't required and typically aren't allowed.
Will I see my Michigan test score right after I submit?
Yes. MI SOS testing terminals display pass/fail and your score immediately after you finish. If you pass, they'll normally begin permit processing the same visit.
Will MI SOS test my vision at renewal too?
Vision screening conducted at in-person renewals at a Secretary of State office.
Do I need a DOT medical card before the Michigan CDL test?
Yes. FMCSA requires a valid DOT medical examiner's certificate before you can be issued a CDL — bring it to your appointment. You cannot take the CDL knowledge test without one on file.
What happens right after I pass the Michigan knowledge test?
If you brought all required documents, MI SOS normally issues a temporary paper permit or license the same day. Your printed card typically arrives by mail within 2-4 weeks.
What happens before I actually take the Michigan test at the office?
You'll present your documents, pay applicable fees, pass the vision screening, and (if you're issued a permit that day) get your photo taken. Only then are you handed off to a testing terminal or a paper packet.
Are all Michigan CDL test questions multiple choice?
Yes. Every question presents 3-4 answer choices with exactly one correct answer. There are no fill-in-the-blank, true/false, or essay questions on the MI SOS knowledge test.
Is the Michigan knowledge test on paper or computer?
Computer testing station at Secretary of State office (50 questions: 25 signs + 25 rules); online at-home option via KnowTo Drive with webcam identity verification for adults.
