Maine DMV Test FAQ
How many questions are on the Maine motorcycle (Class M) permit test?
The ME BMV motorcycle (Class M) knowledge test has 30 multiple-choice questions drawn from the official state handbook — covering road signs, traffic laws, right-of-way, and safe-driving procedures.
Is there a time limit on the Maine knowledge test?
No — ME BMV does not enforce a strict time limit on the knowledge test. Take the time you need to read each question carefully, but don't overthink after your first instinct.
What happens before I actually take the Maine test at the office?
You'll present your documents, pay applicable fees, pass the vision screening, and (if you're issued a permit that day) get your photo taken. Only then are you handed off to a testing terminal or a paper packet.
Should I read the whole Maine handbook before taking practice tests?
Not necessarily. Most successful test-takers skim the handbook once, then drill practice tests. When they miss a question they jump back to that chapter. This is far more efficient than a cover-to-cover read.
Is the Maine written test the same as the road test?
No. The knowledge test is a written or computer-based exam on rules and signs. After you pass it, you'll take a separate behind-the-wheel road test with an examiner to earn your full license.
If I'm nervous, is it better to reschedule my Maine appointment?
If you consistently score at or above passing (80-85%+) on our practice tests, don't reschedule — test-day nerves usually drop 5-10 points and you'll still pass. If your practice scores are still below passing, more prep + a later date is worth it.
Should I go with my first instinct on the Maine test?
Usually yes. Research on multiple-choice exams shows changing an answer helps only when you realize you misread the question — not when you simply feel uncertain. Read carefully once, commit, move on.
Are there "all of the above" trick answers on the Maine test?
Occasionally, but they're not tricks — they're used when multiple listed actions are all correct. If two answer choices look correct and "all of the above" is offered, that's usually the right pick.
What's a passing score on the Maine DMV knowledge test?
You need 21 out of 30 correct — 70% — to pass. The result is displayed immediately after you submit.
Will ME BMV test my vision at renewal too?
Vision test required at the first renewal after age 40, every second renewal thereafter, and every renewal after age 62.
