Hawaii DMV Test FAQ
How many questions are on the Hawaii CDL permit test?
The HI DOT CDL knowledge test has 30 multiple-choice questions drawn from the official state handbook — covering road signs, traffic laws, right-of-way, and safe-driving procedures.
Is the Hawaii written test the same as the road test?
No. The knowledge test is a written or computer-based exam on rules and signs. After you pass it, you'll take a separate behind-the-wheel road test with an examiner to earn your full license.
Can I look at the Hawaii handbook during the actual test?
No — HI DOT treats the exam as closed-book. The handbook is what you use to prepare, not to reference during the exam.
Are all Hawaii CDL test questions multiple choice?
Yes. Every question presents 3-4 answer choices with exactly one correct answer. There are no fill-in-the-blank, true/false, or essay questions on the HI DOT knowledge test.
Can I use my phone during the Hawaii DMV knowledge test?
No. All electronics are prohibited during the exam and most offices ask you to leave them in a locker. Use your phone to drill practice tests before you walk in.
Do I need endorsements beyond the Hawaii CDL general knowledge?
Depending on what you'll haul, yes: Hazmat (H), Tank (N), Doubles/Triples (T), Passenger (P), and School Bus (S) each have their own written test. Air Brakes (L) is also required for most tractor-trailer combos.
Do I need an appointment for the Hawaii knowledge test?
No appointment for the online KnowTo Drive test; in-person permit issuance is by appointment at a Honolulu CSD driver licensing center within 60 days of passing.
If I fail, can I retake the Hawaii test the same day?
Typically no — most states enforce a waiting period between attempts. See the retake FAQ item above (if we have specific data for your state) or ask the office when they schedule your retake.
What happens before I actually take the Hawaii test at the office?
You'll present your documents, pay applicable fees, pass the vision screening, and (if you're issued a permit that day) get your photo taken. Only then are you handed off to a testing terminal or a paper packet.
Will I see my Hawaii test score right after I submit?
Yes. HI DOT testing terminals display pass/fail and your score immediately after you finish. If you pass, they'll normally begin permit processing the same visit.
