Georgia DMV Test FAQ
How many questions are on the Georgia CDL permit test?
The GA DDS CDL knowledge test has 40 multiple-choice questions drawn from the official state handbook — covering road signs, traffic laws, right-of-way, and safe-driving procedures.
Should I read the whole Georgia handbook before taking practice tests?
Not necessarily. Most successful test-takers skim the handbook once, then drill practice tests. When they miss a question they jump back to that chapter. This is far more efficient than a cover-to-cover read.
On the Georgia DMV test, should I answer what's literally in the handbook even if it seems overly cautious?
Yes. If the handbook says "come to a complete stop at every stop sign," answer that — even if in the real world people roll through. Test questions grade against the handbook, not real-world driving habits.
Can I retake the Georgia knowledge test if I fail?
Yes. Unlimited retakes with waiting period and fee. You must wait 1 day between attempts. Each retake costs $10.
Are all Georgia CDL test questions multiple choice?
Yes. Every question presents 3-4 answer choices with exactly one correct answer. There are no fill-in-the-blank, true/false, or essay questions on the GA DDS knowledge test.
Do I need endorsements beyond the Georgia CDL general knowledge?
Depending on what you'll haul, yes: Hazmat (H), Tank (N), Doubles/Triples (T), Passenger (P), and School Bus (S) each have their own written test. Air Brakes (L) is also required for most tractor-trailer combos.
What happens right after I pass the Georgia knowledge test?
If you brought all required documents, GA DDS normally issues a temporary paper permit or license the same day. Your printed card typically arrives by mail within 2-4 weeks.
If I'm under 18, does a parent need to be with me for the Georgia test?
A parent or guardian doesn't sit through the test with you, but under-18 applicants normally need a parent's signature on the application before GA DDS will schedule or administer the exam. Bring the signed form.
Is the Georgia written test the same as the road test?
No. The knowledge test is a written or computer-based exam on rules and signs. After you pass it, you'll take a separate behind-the-wheel road test with an examiner to earn your full license.
Who actually administers the Georgia driver knowledge test?
The GA DDS administers the test at its authorized offices. Third-party providers may proctor in some locations, but the exam content and scoring are set by GA DDS.
