Starting May 7, 2025, you need a REAL ID-compliant license (or a passport / military ID / Global Entry card) to board a domestic flight or enter a federal building. This guide covers what REAL ID actually requires and how to upgrade.
How to spot a REAL ID
REAL ID-compliant licenses have a star in the upper-right corner. California uses a yellow bear silhouette inside a star; most other states use a plain gold or black star. If your current license has no star, it is "non-compliant" and won't work as airport ID after the May 7, 2025 cutoff.
Documents you need to bring
Federal regulations require 4 categories of proof. Bring originals or certified copies — photocopies are rejected at most DMVs.
- Proof of identity — US passport, certified birth certificate (with raised seal), or permanent resident card.
- Proof of Social Security number — SSN card, W-2, paystub, or SSA-1099.
- Two proofs of state residency — utility bill, mortgage statement, lease, bank statement, or insurance card. Both must show your current address.
- Proof of name change (only if applicable) — marriage certificate, divorce decree, or court order linking your birth name to your current legal name.
What if I don't want REAL ID?
You can still get a regular state license without the federal compliance. It will work for driving and most state-level ID purposes — just not for flights or federal buildings. You'll need a passport for those instead.
Can I upgrade my existing license to REAL ID?
Yes. Most states let you upgrade at no extra cost during your normal renewal cycle. To upgrade between renewals, you typically pay a small reissue fee (usually $5-$30) and visit the DMV in person — you can't do REAL ID upgrades online because they require document verification.
DMV appointment tips
- Book an appointment online if your state offers it — walk-ins frequently wait 2-4 hours.
- Verify document requirements on your state's DMV site before you go — requirements vary slightly by state.
- Bring extra cash or check (some smaller offices don't accept credit cards).
