Step 1 — Check if you can renew online

Online renewal is available for U.S. citizens renewing a non-commercial DL or state ID who don't require a vision screening and aren't changing data on file. Effective Nov 13, 2025, existing REAL ID holders may also renew online.

Step 4 — Take a vision test (if required)

Vision test required at the first renewal after age 40, every second renewal thereafter, and every renewal after age 62. Bring your glasses or contacts if you wear them.

Step 5 — Receive your new license

You'll get a temporary paper license at the DMV that's valid for 30-60 days. Your permanent plastic license arrives by mail in 7-14 business days. If your renewal was online, expect 10-21 days mailing time.
