Texas Handbook FAQ
Is this the official Texas motorcycle handbook?
Yes. The handbook mirrored above is the same document TX DPS publishes on its official website — we host it here for faster mobile loading and cleaner reading.
Do I have to read the whole Texas handbook to pass the test?
The TX DPS test has 30 questions and you need 24 correct (80%) to pass. All questions come from the handbook, but strategic readers focus on Signs, Right-of-Way, and Signaling first — those chapters carry the most test weight.
Should I read the Texas handbook as a PDF or HTML?
PDF preserves the state's page layout and images; HTML is faster on mobile and searchable via Ctrl-F. Most students find HTML best for study, PDF best for a final read-through before test day.
Is there an audio version of the Texas handbook?
TX DPS does not publish an official audio edition. You can use a device text-to-speech reader on the PDF/HTML — most work well, though sign images obviously don't get spoken.
Can I read the Texas handbook on my phone?
Yes. Both the official PDF and our mirrored HTML version work on mobile. HTML loads faster on cellular and is easier to search — use the reader above for study sessions on the go.
What documents does TX DPS require when I show up for the test?
Proof of U.S. citizenship or lawful presence, proof of Texas residency, proof of identity, Social Security Number, current Texas vehicle registration and proof of insurance for each vehicle owned, and (ages 18-24) driver education course completion certificate.
Where do I actually take the Texas test after reading the handbook?
At any TX DPS location. Use our /dmv-near-me/tx finder for the nearest office with address, hours, and phone.
Are official Texas handbook translations available?
TX DPS publishes select translations (usually Spanish, sometimes others) on its site. Third-party translations exist online but should be cross-checked against the English source — legal wording matters on the exam.
