Taking the Knowledge Test in Mississippi
Planning to take your written permit test at Mississippi Driver Service Bureau? Here's what MS DPS requires statewide — call ahead to confirm this location offers knowledge testing.
Format: In-person computer/kiosk at Driver License Station; no cell phones or electronics allowed in the testing area.
Appointments: Driver Service Bureau highly recommends scheduling online at dps.ms.gov/appointment; some walk-ins accepted but appointments are prioritized.
Bring: Completed application, original birth certificate (no photocopies), SSN card, two proofs of residency, and School Attendance Form (MDE 39) for ages 15-17 dated within 30 days.
If you don't pass: May retest the next business day after failing; after multiple failures a 30-day wait applies; a 6-month ban applies if caught cheating or with prohibited electronics. Wait 1 day(s) before retaking.
Renewing Your License in Mississippi
Mississippi licenses are valid for 8 years and a standard renewal costs $47. Online renewal is available at the DPS self-service portal; allowed only if your license/ID isn't expired more than 12 months, and only every other renewal (must alternate with an in-person renewal).
When to renew: Up to 6 months before expiration
Skip the trip if you can — many renewals can be completed online. See our step-by-step MS renewal guide for eligibility, REAL ID upgrades, and vision-test rules.
