Format: Multiple choice on computer; offered in-person at DMV Service Center (walk-in), Test Proctoring Center (appointment), or virtually via takemydrivingtest.com/dc (appointment).
Appointments: Required for virtual and Test Proctoring Center testing; walk-in first-come, first-serve at DC DMV Service Centers.
Bring: Proof of identity and age (16+), two proofs of DC residency, proof of Social Security Number, and parental consent if under 18; must have no outstanding DC debts or unpaid traffic fines.
If you don't pass: Unlimited with waiting period; if not passed 6 times within a 12-month period, must wait 12 months from initial failure before a 7th attempt. Wait 3 day(s) before retaking.
Renewing Your License in District of Columbia
District of Columbia licenses are valid for 8 years and a standard renewal costs $47. You may renew online if you hold a REAL ID, Limited Purpose, or REAL ID provisional driver license; license cannot have been expired more than 365 days; address cannot be changed during the online transaction. Online renewal is allowed every other renewal cycle.
