About Drive Permit Test
Drive Permit Test is a free DMV practice test platform built to help every US driver pass their permit test on the first try — without paywalls, signups, or aggressive ads.
What we cover
- All 50 states + DC — every state's car permit, motorcycle (Class M), and CDL preparation.
- 9,500+ practice questions sourced directly from official state driver's handbooks.
- 770 real DMV office locations with addresses, hours, services, and turn-by-turn directions.
- 20+ MUTCD road signs with shape, color, code, and meaning.
- EN + ES interface for Spanish-speaking drivers.
How questions are written
Every question in our pool is written from the official state driver's handbook. Handbooks are public-domain government documents (per US 17 U.S.C. § 105), so the underlying source material is freely usable. We rephrase to match common DMV exam wording without copying verbatim.
Office data comes from OpenStreetMap contributors, used under the ODbL license.
Why free?
Drive Permit Test exists because most "free" DMV test sites paywall the questions you actually need, sell your email to driving schools, or run misleading "official-looking" ads. We don't. The site is supported by non-personalized banner ads (you can opt out) and optional driving school partnerships — never by selling user data.
Open data, open source
Office data, road sign references, and handbook PDFs are all sourced from public-domain government work. We give attribution where it's required (OSM, Wikimedia Commons), and we publish our practice question methodology openly. If you find a factual error, tell us — we update within 48 hours.
For driving schools
We offer a free embeddable practice quiz widget — copy one line of HTML to add real DMV-style questions to your school's site. No signup, no API key, no analytics on your visitors.
