How to Renew Your South Carolina Driver License

Step-by-step guide for renewing your South Carolina license through SC DMV. Covers online, mail, and in-person options, fees, and what to bring.

Validity 8 years
Standard fee $25
Renew early SCDMV recommends mailing renewal applications at least three weeks before the expiration date; no specific advance window is published for online renewals
After expiration If expired less than 9 months you can renew normally; if expired 9 months or more you must visit a branch with documentation and pass vision, knowledge, and skills tests

Step 1 — Check if you can renew online

U.S. citizens with a regular (Class D, E, F, G, M, or combinations) license, expired less than 9 months, no suspensions, no more than 5 points in the last 2 years, who didn't renew online or by mail last time, and who provide an electronic vision certification (or are active-duty military) may renew online with a valid credit/debit card.

Step 2 — Check what to bring

A straightforward renewal usually needs your current South Carolina licence and the fee. What else SC DMV asks for depends on whether you are also upgrading to REAL ID, changing your name or address, or renewing after a lapse — and those requirements differ by state. Check the current list on the SC DMV renewal page before you go.

Step 3 — Pay the renewal fee

SC DMV charges $25 for a standard non-commercial license renewal valid for 8 years. CDL and motorcycle endorsement renewals cost extra; check the official fee schedule for exact amounts.

Step 4 — Take a vision test (if required)

As of October 1, 2020, a vision screening is required to renew any driver's license or beginner's permit. Bring your glasses or contacts if you wear them.

Step 5 — Receive your new licence

Most agencies issue an interim credential you can drive on while the printed card is produced, then post the card separately. How long the interim lasts and how long the card takes are both set by SC DMV and published on its renewal page. Plan around the dates it gives rather than a general estimate.

REAL ID upgrade in South Carolina

Online or mail renewals produce a standard (non-REAL ID) license unless all required REAL ID documents are already on file with SCDMV; otherwise you must visit a branch in person with the required documents to receive a REAL ID.
