Taking the Knowledge Test in New Mexico
Planning to take your written permit test at Motor Vehicle Department? Here's what NM MVD requires statewide — call ahead to confirm this location offers knowledge testing.
Format: 25 questions, multiple choice, need 18 correct (70%) to pass.
Appointments: Walk-ins accepted; appointments recommended and can be scheduled online up to 30 days in advance.
Bring: Proof of identification number, proof of identity and age, and two proofs of New Mexico residency; teens under 18 need proof of completion or enrollment in a state-approved driver education program.
If you don't pass: Twice per week; after 3 failures must wait 6 months.
Renewing Your License in New Mexico
New Mexico licenses are valid for 4 years and a standard renewal costs $18. Drivers may renew or replace a REAL ID or Standard license online via the MyMVD eServices portal; first-time REAL ID applicants must follow the new-application process instead of renewal.
