Format: Computer testing station at Secretary of State office (50 questions: 25 signs + 25 rules); online at-home option via KnowTo Drive with webcam identity verification for adults.
Appointments: Appointment recommended for SOS office visit (can be scheduled up to one hour before closing); no appointment needed for the online at-home version.
Bring: Proof of legal presence, Social Security number, proof of identity, and Michigan residency. Documents must be in English or accompanied by an English translation.
If you don't pass: Multiple attempts allowed; no posted lifetime limit.
Renewing Your License in Michigan
Michigan licenses are valid for 4 years and a standard renewal costs $18. Licenses and IDs may be renewed online, by mail, or at a self-service station. Online renewal isn't available for enhanced licenses, after two consecutive alternate renewals, expired over 4 years, age 21 transition, or certain other conditions.
