Taking the Knowledge Test in Indiana
Planning to take your written permit test at BMV? Here's what IN BMV requires statewide — call ahead to confirm this location offers knowledge testing.
Format: Computer touchscreen (Automated Testing Terminals). 80% required on each of two sections (rules and signs).
Appointments: Walk-in at any BMV branch; appointment needed only for ASL-interpreted or read-aloud exams.
Bring: Documents proving identity, Social Security number, lawful status, and two documents showing Indiana residency (or an Indiana Residency Affidavit).
If you don't pass: Unlimited but only one attempt per business day; results valid 180 days. Wait 1 day(s) before retaking.
Renewing Your License in Indiana
Indiana licenses are valid for 6 years and a standard renewal costs $17. Indiana U.S. citizens under age 75 with a license expiring within 24 months (or expired no more than 180 days), an existing photo on file, fewer than 6 active points, and no name/address changes may renew online via myBMV.
